DETROIT ? Aereo, an over-the-air provider of TV channels through the Internet’s cloud, hosted its launch party Monday at Great Lakes Coffee’s midtown location where 200 potential customers stopped by for the demo day.
On Oct. 28, Aereo?s 21st century antenna product became available for consumers in Lapeer, Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, Sanilac, Saint Clair, Washtenaw and Wayne counties. Aereo?s Motown debut follows launches in Boston, Atlanta, Miami, Salt Lake City, Houston and Dallas.
?Consumer?s are frustrated about not having enough choices for how to watch TV,? said Virginia Lam, Aereo?s Vice President of Communications. ?We?re now focused on our build out. We?re expanding rapidly into 22 cities this year. ?
Lam said Aereo was planning on adding 10 to 12 more cities in 2014. Aereo is targeting regions with the large populations, but the right demographics. Key factors include a large broadband and mobile device penetration, and a tech savvy population. She said Aereo roll outs in other major Michigan metropolitan areas are not in the cards for 2014.
Aereo’s technology works on smart devices from tablets to phones to laptop computers. Aereo is currently supported on iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch and devices running Android operating system version 4.2 or higher. An Aereo Android app is available from Google Play Store. Aereo is also supported on Chrome, Safari, Internet Explorer 9, Firefox, Opera, AppleTV (via airplay) and Roku devices.
In the Detroit metropolitan region, consumers will be able to use Aereo’s unique antenna/DVR technology to record and watch more than 20 over-the-air channels including major networks such WJBK (Fox), WDIV (NBC), WXYZ (ABC), WTVS (PBS); and special interest channels such as BounceTV, MOVIES!, ThisTV, MyNetworkTV, AntennaTV and Qubo (children’s programming). In addition, consumers will also have the ability to add Bloomberg Television.
Further programming options, however, are not in the cards anytime soon, Lam said. Aereo is adding markets for the foreseeable future not additional programming. But this limited programming means small monthly fees. Aereo service starts at $8 a month and provides 20 hours of DVR storage. $12 a month gets 60 hours of DVR service. There is no contract. Service is month-to-month. Plus the first 30 days are free.
?We?re giving control back to the consumers,? Lam said.
