GRAND RAPIDS – Right to Life of Michigan began announcing its list of endorsements in the general election and largely backed Republican incumbents in key seats with one major exception: U.S. Rep. Justin Amash of Cascade Township, who has voted against some of the group’s priorities while in Congress.
U.S. Rep. Justin Amash’s practice of not supporting legislation he does not think is properly drafted potentially hurt him in the endorsement race, as the RTL PAC chose not to endorse in the 3rd U.S. House District.
RTL PAC Director David Malone said the group chose not to endorse Amash (R-Cascade Township) “based on a few of his votes over this last term.”
In particular, Amash voted present, twice, on legislation to defund Planned Parenthood and opposed a bill to ban “sex selection abortion,” Malone said.
Amash’s campaign did not return calls for comment. He faces Democrat Steve Pestka in a seat that has drawn some interest as possibly being competitive.
In state House races, Republican incumbents all received endorsements save for Rep. Mark Ouimet in the 52nd House District.
In the 84th House District, there was a blanket endorsement of Democrat Terry Brown and Republican Dan Grimshaw.
In the open competitive seats, Right to Life endorsed Republicans Sean Clark in the 25th House District, Klint Kesto in the 39th House District and Jeff Oesterle in the 67th House District.
