CUPERTINO – Apple Inc. said it received more than four million orders of its two new iPhone 6 models in the first 24 hours on Sept. 12, surpassing the previous record first-day pre-orders set in 2012 when Apple released the iPhone 5.

The surge in interest has marketers as well as consumers intrigued. Jon Elvekrog, 140 Proof co-founder and CEO, joins the News Hub with with analysis on what it means for the future of mobile, CNET News.Com reported.

For the first time, Apple is taking preorders for two new iPhones at the same time. Apple released two new iPhones last year?the iPhone 5S and 5C?but only accepted preorders for the 5C. Apple plans to begin selling the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus on Friday.

Sales expectations are high for the new iPhones. After years of resisting the urge to upgrade iPhones with a larger display, Apple’s two new smartphones are significantly larger than its current four-inch screen. The iPhone 6 has a 4.7-inch display, while the iPhone 6 Plus has a 5.5-inch screen measured diagonally.

Apple’s online store indicates a three- to four-week shipment wait for the iPhone 6 Plus and a seven- to 10-day wait for the iPhone 6.

As a result of the strong demand, Apple said some people who preordered a new phone won’t receive it until October. Apple said a “significant” number of the phones would be delivered to customers on Friday and later this month.

Apple said additional phones will be available to walk-in customers at 8 a.m. local time Friday at its retail stores. Customers usually line up outside of Apple stores to buy the iPhone on the first day it becomes available.

The company said some phones also will be available on Friday from wireless carriers Verizon Communications Inc., AT&T Inc., T-Mobile US and Sprint Corp.

The carriers also have a lot riding on the new phone’s launch, and are pursuing iPhone users with aggressive promotions and incentives. Verizon is offering free iPhone 6 devices to customers who trade in an old iPhone and sign a two-year contract, for instance, while Sprint is cutting the price of its unlimited data plan for iPhone 6 users.

As of Friday, Verizon customers had to wait until the end of October for their preorders, and AT&T customers were told they’d have to wait until November.
