TROY – Since the creation of Automation Alley in 1999 by Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson, the organization has flourished into Michigan’s largest technology business association, now with more than 900 members.
Beginning with just 44 members, Automation Alley’s reach now extends to the eight counties that encompass Southeast Michigan and the city of Detroit. With more than 900 members from the business, government and education sector, Automation Alley is busy influencing growth in the region’s burgeoning technology industry.
Recently, Automation Alley proudly opened service offices in Genesee and Macomb counties with the assistance of our regional partners. Staffed by an Alley team member once per week, the office allows members in Genesee and Macomb the opportunity to access Automation Alley programming and services in their own backyard.
Automation Alley’s trade mission initiatives, which began back in 2001, have resulted in the creation of more than 100 new jobs and $130 million in new business, investment and economic development for local company participants and the Southeast Michigan region. Upcoming trade missions include Brazil in October, and Russia and India in 2009. Just recently, Automation Alley was recognized for its export activities with the Presidential “E” Award for Exporting, which recognizes U.S. firms for their competitive achievements in world markets and their part in increasing U.S. exports abroad.
In addition, Automation Alley has invested $2.7 million in 20 local start-up technology companies from across Southeast Michigan. Through the business accelerator program, Automation Alley has assisted 435 technology companies with business counseling and training, access to service provider networks, marketing, collaboration, promotion opportunities, and mentoring.
By promoting member prosperity through technology acceleration, business assistance and international trade, Automation Alley continues to lead the way in cultivating job creation and fostering entrepreneurialism in Southeast Michigan.
