LANSING – A new coalition of businesses announced on Tuesday it was starting a new effort to expand electric utility choice in the state.

Currently the state has 10 percent of its electric utility capacity open for utility choice which was set by a 2008 law that critics said subjected the state to monopoly control of electric utilities by DTE Energy and Consumers Energy, but which supporters said also helped set a renewal energy portfolio for the state for the first time.

The new group is called Electric Competition for Michigan Now and a big supporter is Rep. Roy Schmidt (D-Grand Rapids), who has also introduced legislation, HB 6127 , expanding the choice option to 25 percent.

The group is made up of a variety of companies, including manufacturers like Dart Container, and hospitality companies like Buffalo Wild Wings along with some public agencies.
