LANSING – As the Michigan House Education subcommittee begins hearings on the Common Core State Standards, one business group is pushing its members to reach out to legislators and others on the importance of maintaining the standards.

Business Leaders for Michigan sent an email Tuesday touting the standards as an economic development tool.

“As a leader with a strong interest in the talent of the future, we encourage you to help others and the media understand how critical these standards are to Michigan’s future economic success,” Doug Rothwell, president and CEO of the group, said in the email.

In addition to urging members to attend at least one of the hearings on the issue, he called for direct contact with legislators and the media.

In particular, he called for members to counter the message from some opponents that adopting the Common Core gives control of Michigan’s schools to the federal government.

“The standards simply specify what kids should be able to know and do at every grade level in math and English, so they can be ready to advance when they graduate no matter whether they enter the workforce or continue their education,” he said.
