DETROIT ? Mark Tercek, president and CEO of The Nature Conservancy, will explore why responsible stewardship of nature is of the utmost importance to businesses, governments and societies on May 21 at a program hosted by Inforum Michigan.

After the event, Tercek will be signing copies of his recently released best-selling book, Nature’s Fortune: How Business and Society Thrive by Investing in Nature.

Following his remarks, Tercek will be joined on stage by Tom Walsh, business columnist at the Detroit Free Press, who will field questions from the audience.

As a former managing director for Goldman Sachs, where he spent 25 years, he brings deep business experience to his role leading the Conservancy, which he joined in 2008.

Environmentalists love nature for its own sake. This is an enormously important reason to protect it. But now, more than ever, we must convince people to value nature.

Thinking of nature as an infrastructure — or “green infrastructure” — reveals other compelling reasons to protect our planet’s natural systems. Nature is the fundamental underpinning to our well-being. It gives us clean air to breathe, fresh water to drink, and plentiful food and fish to eat. It offers protection from storms and floods, and the stable climate that people, plants, and animals need to thrive.

Tercek argues that conservation is not only the right thing to do — it is also the smart thing to do. He demonstrates how investments in nature can produce big returns for businesses, governments and society — and that saving nature is one of the smartest investments we can make.
