DETROIT ? Challenge Detroit has extended the deadline to apply for its one-year entrepreneur internship until March 25 to give college students on spring break time to apply.
So far, Challenge Detroit has received 700 applications from Michigan and several other states, as well as some foreign countries, said executive director Deirdre Greene. The original deadline was March 16.
?We realized we set our deadline in the midst of spring break and wanted to extend it until March 25,? she said.
Challenge Detroit will select 30 innovative leaders from throughout the United States to live, work, play and give in Detroit. Participants will live in Detroit, supported by a $500-a-month housing stipend; receive a $30,000 salary to work at one of the top companies in the region; participate in monthly team challenges, in partnership with area non-profits, designed to positively impact the city and region; and experience the city through organized social and cultural events.
In February, Credit Acceptance Corp. chairman and founder, Donald A. Foss, has personally pledged $500,000 to the initiative focused on revitalizing Detroit by attracting young entrepreneurs to the city.
Greene said Challenge Detroit will be making selections for the first round in early April. Then a community vote will take place from April 7 through 13 where anyone on the Internet can vote for candidates they think should make the finals. The winners will be announced in mid to late May. The year in Detroit will begin in August 2012.
Detroit-area companies are participating in Challenge Detroit and will serve as host companies for the 30 participants. Companies participating include: ePrize LLC, Quicken Loans Inc., Valassis Media Solutions, Compuware Corp., Beaumont Hospitals, United Way, hiredMYway.com and Team Detroit.
