DETROIT ? Peter Karmanos Jr., one of three founding partners of Compuware Corp., has left day-to-day management of Michigan’s largest tech company. He now is executive chairman of the board.

The company said COO Bob Paul would move into the position of CEO, and Joseph Anglieri would join the company as president and COO.

Karmanos co-founded the company in 1973 with Thomas Thewes and Allen B. Cutting using $9000 they pooled from their income tax returns. The three men provided professional technical services to computer users. Compuware introduced its first software product, Abend-Aid, in 1977. The product help computer users diagnose cases in which computer programs had come to an ?abend? ? an abnormal end.

Karmanos took Compuware public in 1992, and led the 2000-03 move of the company from suburban Farmington Hills to a new headquarters in downtown Detroit. Compuware employs about 4,300.

Karmanos said in a statement. ?In Bob and Joe, I?m confident that we have identified two senior leaders who will work with the rest of our talented team to benefit our customers, shareholders and employees.?

Paul joined the company in 2004 through its acquisition of Covisint. He has been president and COO since 2008. In that role, he has led the company?s products and services operations, as well as a number of other key operational, strategy and marketing functions. As the company?s top executive, Paul will build on his track record of delivering profitable growth by providing daily and strategic guidance for all Compuware operations.

Angileri joins Compuware from his role as Managing Partner of Deloitte?s Michigan region. A 19-year partner at Deloitte, Angileri has more than 25 years experience providing strategic tax, financial advisory and corporate finance services to clients. In his new role at Compuware, he will assume responsibility for the finance, administration, legal and human resources functions. Over time, Angileri will expand his responsibilities over selected business units.

The changes will be effective Monday, June 20.
