LANSING – The Michigan League of Conservation Voters is asking its supporters to contact Governor Rick Snyder and urge that he veto legislation barring state departments in most cases from issuing rules that go beyond federal regulations.

Last week, Snyder’s communications staff indicated the governor might veto HB 4326 , which would only allow emergency rules to exceed federal regulations. Snyder press secretary Sara Wurfel reiterated that position Tuesday.

“While the governor is a proponent of regulatory reform and generally supportive of this concept in the bill, he feels it’s too broad and too encompassing as presented,” she said. “It’s possible that he is going to veto this bill.”

Tuesday, the League, in urging its supporters to contact Snyder said: “Preventing Michigan from creating protections stricter than federal law is simply bad policy. Our state needs the ability to go above and beyond federal standards to protect it. We can’t be kept to the same standards as other states who do not have the responsibility of stewarding over 20 percent of the world’s freshwater.”
