LANSING – Consumers Energy has paid Michigan companies $2.8 million and awarded $71 million in multi-year contracts in the first three months of its involvement in the state’s new Pure Michigan Business Connect initiative.

The public/private initiative announced in June could mean as much as $3 billion would be available to Michigan businesses.

The utility pledged to spend $50 million a year for five years, on top of the $2 billion it already spends on Michigan.

“We’ve made a good start on this ‘Michigan preferred’ journey with Governor Rick Snyder, the Michigan Economic Development Corporation and many partners towards building a stronger state economy,” Consumers’ president and CEO said in a statement.

The first report from Consumers includes 17 Michigan-based companies the utility is doing business with, including Grand River Construction Company in Hudsonville, Walbridge Company in Detroit, United Solar in Auburn Hills and Continental Canteen in Sterling Heights.
