GROSS POINTE FARMS ? The residence for the Canadian Consulate General in Detroit served as the forum Wednesday for the June meeting of the Great Lakes Angels, which featured four presentations from two companies each from the United States and Canada.

Canadian-based Gauntlet Technology Systems and Walkerville Brewing Company provided a 15-minute overview for about two dozens angel investors as did U.S.-based MTS Driver Recruiters and Tellurex Corp. It was the second cross-border investing session held at the Consulate General’s residence in the past year.

Great Lakes Angels is one of three angel-investing groups based in Michigan, and the only one that works closely with high net worth individuals in Ontario, Canada. GLA President David Weaver said he hopes the programs lead to more cross border deals. Grand Angels in Grand Rapids focuses more on West Michigan investments, while Ann Arbor Angels in Ann Arbor looks primarily for Washtenaw County deals.

The Canadian presenting companies included:

Gauntlet Technology Systems

The Gauntlet System is designed to keep impaired individuals from starting their vehicles and to prevent vehicle theft. The patented Gauntlet System circuitry is based on the medically accepted principal that a person impaired through alcohol, drugs and/or sleep deprivation will have a diminished reaction time. The Gauntlet System requires a potential operator(s) of a vehicle to perform a gauntlet of motor skill functions within a specified time period prior to successful ignition of the vehicle. The Gauntlet System is enhanced by use of biometric Fingerprint Recognition Technology, which self adjusts, for each driver, making it effective for vehicles driven by multiple individuals.

Walkerville Brewing Company

A high caliber microbrewery, began brewing in 1999 and is located in Walkerville, ?The Brew District? of Windsor, Ontario. The Walkerville Brewing Company has distinguished itself as ?The Canadian Brewery of the Year? in 2005 and was recipient of the Gold Medal at the Canadian Brewing Awards both in 2003 and in 2004. Walkerville is the only microbrewery west of London, Ontario and is therefore in a favorable position to take a dominant share of the specialty beer market throughout this region. Our geographical location strategically places the company with easy access to the U.S. markets of Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Illinois providing a population base of 40 million within a five-hour distribution range. Our primary objective is to propel the company into a prominent market position. We feel that within five years, Walkerville Brewing Company will be positioned for an initial public offering, profitable acquisition or merger.

While the U.S.-based presenting companies included:

MTS Driver Recruiters

Based out of Southfield, MTS is a commercial truck driver recruitment firm that offers a comprehensive range of outsourced recruitment solutions to clients in the trucking industry. MTS has been in operation for over five years, and has grown to over $5 million in sales in 2005. The company has developed a reputation for uniform customer satisfaction, built on its unmatched reach across the country, reliable managed-recruiting services and the ability to accurately match a client to the most qualified driver for a particular position. MTS has developed a proprietary and highly scalable recruiting model that allows it to recruit qualified drivers nationwide for clients in the transportation industry who have, due to the severe drive shortage, been less successful at recruiting drivers on their own. MTS? unique business model is enabling it to expand its operations across the nation, without the need for significant investments and fixed costs that restrict the growth of typical driver staffing firms.

Tellurex Corporation

A privately held Michigan C Corporation located in Traverse City, Tellurex designs, manufactures and markets thermoelectric (?TE?) modules as well as subassemblies and products that employ the modules. TE modules (1) perform solid- state heating or cooling when connected to an electrical current, and (2) generate an electrical current when exposed to a heat source. Tellurex has a strategic research relationship with Michigan State University, a world leader in the thermoelectric materials research, and has developed patented, super-efficient TE materials (both autonomously and in collaboration) and its own proprietary manufacturing processes. Its research is underwritten through SBIR grants from the Department of Defense. The company now sells modules and products to the medical appliance and food service industries. It is introducing a new product ) a beverage holder that will heat or chill whatever it holds) that will be built into certain 2007 model DaimlerChrysler automobiles. Tellurex is a DaimlerChrysler Tier One supplier. As new materials from its laboratories are integrated into future generation modules, Tellurex will diversify beyond the heating and cooling features of the technology and into the generation of clean power by harvesting waste heat from sources that now simply dissipate it into the atmosphere.
