WARREN – Many Michigan businesses have found that ?being green? is good for business, but only two have been named Elite Winners at this year’s 101 Best and Brightest Sustainable Companies awards event on April 18, 2012 honoring all of Michigan?s 101 Best and Brightest Sustainable Companies.

The 101 Best and Brightest Sustainable Companies awards program honors companies from all industries that are focused on being more sustainable, improving the lives of their employees and are committed to the local and global environments.

?Being green has become a standard of good business strategy in Michigan and our winning companies have demonstrated a sharp focus on inspiring sustainability and have shown leadership in Green initiatives. It was an honor to present these awards for the first time ever at this event,? said Jennifer Kluge, president and CEO, Michigan Business and Professional Association, which presented the event. ?By providing this benchmark for Green standards in business, we hope to inspire many other Michigan companies to follow their lead.?

The two Elite winners were selected based on their overall high scores and named an Elite winner in either two categories: Small Business or Best of the Best Overall.

The Small Business Elite Award was presented to Detroit-based IPAX Cleanogel Inc. The company is a manufacturer and distributor of cleaning and maintenance products. They are a Green Seal, and Bio-preferred Certified Manufacturer. They are considered a pioneer for the use of eco-friendly products in the automotive industry more than 30 years ago.

The most prestigious award, ?Best of the Best,? was presented to Detroit-based Turner Construction Company. Turner Construction Company stood above all of this year?s entries with exceptional sustainable business practices. The company outranked all of the competing companies in every category that are used to evaluate the winning entries.

Some of Turner Construction?s accomplishments included diverting more than 1 million tons of construction waste from landfills and reducing its corporate greenhouse gas emissions. It has achieved LEED certification for 10 offices, representing 400,000 square feet of space. It created a Green Zone Program as a way to recognize the sustainability of jobsite offices that provide a healthier and more productive workplace for employees.

The 101 Best and Brightest Sustainable Companies is co-presented by Corp! magazine, Davenport University, and dmStrategists. The event was sponsored by DTE Energy, Grand Rapids Business Journal, Cascade Engineering, Comcast Business Class, ITC Holdings, WOOD Radio and WJR 760 AM.

The 101 Best and Brightest Sustainable Companies celebrates organizations that inspire and produce green technology to impact the industry and environment. This is the premier awards symposium that celebrates those companies that are making their businesses more sustainable, the lives of their employees better and improving the community locally and globally as a whole.
