LANSING – Proponents of a measure to allow embryonic stem cell research in Michigan will concentrate this week on the language voters will see on the ballot in November. The full retail campaign on the issue will begin next month, said former U.S. Rep. Joe Schwarz, the new chair of the campaign committee.

Schwarz said the group will have the money it needs to counter an opposition group that has already begun some campaigning.

“You’ll start seeing the campaign in earnest right after Labor Day,” Schwarz said.

He said the fundraising is underway to pay for that campaign. “I am confident that we are doing it and will have done it when all is said and done.?

The issue is among those the Board of State Canvassers will be addressing Thursday as it approves the 100-word descriptions for ballot proposals.

In addition to Schwarz, former House Speaker Rick Johnson will also be acting as a spokesperson for the campaign. Former campaign Chair Larry Owen will remain on the board but was not able to continue acting as a spokesperson for the campaign because if time commitments, Schwarz said.
