GRAND RAPIDS – The former West Michigan Science & Technology Initiative will officially change its name to GR Current on Tuesday at a Rooftop Happy Hour to be held at the Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts.

The event has maxed out at 400, said GR Current Director Jeff Royce. The lot includes business folks, city officials, entrepreneurs and tenants, as well as partners, he said. Those include Grand Valley State University, City of Grand Rapids, Michigan Economic Development Corp., Van Andel Institute, The Right Place, HUB, Spectrum Health, St. Mary?s, Michigan State and StartGarden.

?Tuesday is the official launch of what?s been about six months worth of effort to restructure the old WMSTI,? Royce said. ?We now have the team in place.?

Monthly inquires have doubled since Royce moved from Atlanta to head up GR Current. In January, less than 20 inquires came from people seeking introduction to angel investors, looking for incubator space, or just seeking answers about what it would be like to become an entrepreneur. In May, that number grew to about 40, he said.

GR Current, part of the Grand Rapids Smart Zone, provides support services, incubators, accelerators, coaching, and access to capital, in a way that best suits the entrepreneurial needs of the Grand Rapids region.
