DETROIT ? Grand Circus, a training institute and event center in the heart of Detroit, is one of seven inaugural members of the Google for Entrepreneurs Tech Hub Network that was announced in Chicago on Wednesday. The official Detroit announcement is scheduled at the co-working center on Monday.
Google for Entrepreneurs Tech Hub Network is the first formal network of this kind in the world.
?Google heard consistently from tech hubs that they wanted to be part of a larger network, to learn from each other and collaborate together on ideas. We are happy to facilitate that,? said John Lyman, Head of Partnerships for Google for Entrepreneurs. ?Our team has been incredibly impressed with the great work these hubs have done in their cities, and are excited to partner with them to do even more.?
Besides Detroit, the other hubs in the network include: CoCo in Minneapolis; 1871 in Chicago; Communitech in Waterloo, Ontario; Nashville Entrepreneur Center; Galvanize in Denver; and American Underground in Durham, North Carolina.
Google isn’t sharing any financial details, but Lyman said the money given to the hubs is not an investment ? it’s sponsorship money. This means Google won’t automatically become an equity holder in any of the hubs’ startups.
But there’s still something in it for Google. The tech giant will further develop relationships with startups all across the country and its Android products will be readily available for startups’ use.
?This is a real endorsement for tech entrepreneurship in the city,? said Damien Rocchi, CEO of Grand Circus. ?Google is providing a lot of resources, discounts on products, invitations to other Google partner events. We?ll also connect with other Tech Hubs across the network. We?re really excited.?
