DETROIT ? Grand Circus, a tech educational space in downtown Detroit, has been named as a participant in President Obama?s TechHire initiative, described as a ?bold multi-sector initiative and call to action to empower Americans with the skills they need? for high-paying, in demand careers.?

?We?re proud to be a part of this innovative, nation-wide partnership that will train Detroiters for tech careers that local employers need filled,? Grand Circus said on its website. ?After all, we exist to train people intensively for new careers.?

What does TechHire mean for Detroit?

Grand Circus is working with the City of Detroit, the Detroit Employment Solutions Corporation and local companies to build a career pathway for individuals to get into tech careers, regardless of their education background. Folks get the training needed to enter the workforce at the level appropriate to their employment and education background. Along the way, they will have the opportunity to upskill – whether it is going from the role of a help desk technician to software tester or a software tester to a full-time developer, there is a clear pathway for a long, meaningful, and local career.

Locally trained and hired employees means a local, tax-paying workforce that will invest in the city through engagement with public schools, supporting local businesses and buying homes in neighborhoods throughout the city, Grand Circus said on its website.

Does this mean there is funding available for me to take the bootcamps?

We hope. The Department of Labor has announced a highly competitive grant opportunity ranging from $2 to $5 million to expand these training opportunities across the country. Those funds will most likely be announced and distributed in 2016.

Regardless, the cost of a Grand Circus bootcamp is intentionally low – with the average cost of a coding bootcamp at $9,900, our upcoming bootcamps stand at $5,500 (Enterprise Development) and $5,000 (Software Testing) respectively. Grand Circus also strives to have small scholarships available for all of its bootcamps, the case for our upcoming Enterprise Development bootcamps.

Detroit is one of 21 regions, with over 120,000 open technology jobs and more than 300 employer partners in need of this workforce. TechHire plans to work together to new ways to recruit and place applicants based on their actual skills and to create more fast track tech training opportunities. The President is challenging other communities across the country to follow their lead.
