CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Former Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm has long resented Mitt Romney for his insistence on putting Chrysler and General Motors into bankruptcy and she uncorked a tirade of a speech Thursday at the Democratic National Convention that delighted the Democratic audience.

Granholm, now host of “The War Room,” a liberal political talk show on Current TV, has grown increasingly strident and partisan in her months since becoming host, even mocking Republicans last week about the possibility that Hurricane Isaac would cancel the GOP convention as a deliberate act by God.

So it was no surprise that she took after Romney, but the ferocity of her attack was striking. Granholm blasted Mr. Romney’s decisions at Bain that led to worker layoffs of companies it acquired.

“Mitt Romney loves our lakes and our trees. He loves our cars so much, they even have their own elevator,” she said, mocking Romney’s comments about Michigan trees being the right height and one of his homes having an elevator to maneuver cars. “In Romney’s world, the cars get the elevator and the workers get the shaft!”

Granholm hailed President Barack Obama for saving the U.S. auto industry and said the choice between the two candidates was clear.

The climax of the speech came when Granholm began listing off various states – all key states in the Electoral College – and the number of jobs saved as a result of the domestic auto industry surviving. The crowd roared as she thundered off the numbers, at one point yelling with such intensity her entire face was red.

“All across America, manufacturing is rebounding!!! Why?!” Granholm yelled. “When Mitt Romney said ‘Let Detroit Go Bankrupt,’ who took the wheel?! Barack Obama!!!”

While Granholm was speaking, Michigan Republican Party spokesperson Matt Frendewey used his Twitter account to recount the economic struggles the state endured during Granholm’s governorship.

Vice President Joseph Biden paid tribute to Granholm in speech later.

“God love Jennifer Granholm. Wasn’t she great?” he said to cheers. “I love Jennifer.”
