LANSING – Former Governor Jennifer Granholm says she will return to teaching, speaking and other activities after the announcement her show, “The War Room,” would be cancelled following the sale of Current TV to Al Jazeera.

“My agreement with Current was for the duration of the election (and the sale),” Ms. Granholm said in a posting on her Facebook page. “It has been a very fun adventure; we are blessed with a wonderful team. We’ll continue to broadcast ‘The War Room’ for the next few weeks through the transition, but after that I’ll be going back to teaching, speaking and other things. Thanks to all of you who have been watching, and especially thanks to those who helped achieve a key goal: helping to re-elect the president!”

Granholm has been on the air for nearly a year on Current, the network founded by former Vice President Al Gore. By all accounts, the network had a tiny viewership, and endured tumult last year with a messy divorce with its marquee hire, the mercurial Keith Olbermann.

During her show’s run, probably her biggest moment came not on the program, but during her speech to the Democratic National Convention, when she uncorked a wild speech so intense she was completely red in the face by the end. The speech became something of an Internet sensation.

Democrats wished Granholm well in her future pursuits, but Republicans had a field day. While Al Jazeera, funded by the Qatar government but claiming journalistic independence, has won many awards for its coverage, critics have said it is biased against the United States and Israel.

“I want to take a moment and congratulate @JenGranholm for being the first former-Michigan governor to work for Al-Jazeera,” Republican Party spokesperson Matt Frendewey said from his Twitter account. “Way to go!”
