GRAND RAPIDS ? A thousand or more computer hackers and the corporate and government cyber professionals who battle them will call an uneasy truce on Sept. 12-13 when they all attend GRRCon, Midwest Information Security & Hacker CON at DeVos Place.
It?s the third year of the event produced by West Michigan security professionals Chris Payne and Jeff Bleich. Both wanted to save Michigan cyber and physical security professionals the expense of flying to Las Vegas for the annual DEFCON hacker conference.
?It?s a smaller scale than DEFCON in Vegas,? Payne said. ?GRRCon is a friendlier, more family-oriented atmosphere.
GRRCon continues to grow.
?This year we added a lot more workshop training,? Payne said. ?We?ve also added a fourth track, plus an after party on Thursday with food, drinks and games. We?re doing a wacky version of Family Feud.?
Payne said 55 speakers are scheduled for this year?s event, up from 45 last year, and only 20 in its inaugural year. There also are 35 paying sponsors, about the same number as a year ago. The cost is $115 to attend and include food vouchers.
Payne said he already has about 500 tickets sold and expects at least 1000 to attend this year. DeVos Place, however, can accommodate 2,000, which would more than double last year?s attendance.
