LANSING – A package of economic development reform bills that had been somewhat of a legislative ping-pong between the Michigan House and Senate earlier this year have been sent to conference committees, although no consensus on the package has been reached.
Rep. Fred Miller (D-Mount Clemens), who is co-chairing the panels, said Tuesday that getting the bills technically into conference had been postponed as lawmakers dealt with the 2009-10 budget.
While there are still disagreements on the package to be worked out between the two chambers, Miller said he has committed to finding a compromise on the bills with co-chair Sen. Jason Allen (R-Traverse City).
“There’s enough good policy in there” for the parties to work out their issues, Miller said.
The bills would give preference for state and local economic development incentives to companies that hire Michigan workers.
Republicans have rejected provisions for unions in the bills.
