HOUGHTON – The Houghton MTEC SmartZone announced last week that the federal Economic Development Administration has awarded MTEC and Michigan Technological University a $3 million grant for a new tech incubator and innovation center that will create 355 jobs and generate another $5.1 million in private investment in the Houghton area.

The grant will be used to renovate a former Upper Peninsula Power Co. building, at 200 E. Lakeshore Dive, as a technology innovation center. The 51,000 square foot Center will be in downtown Houghton along the Portage Canal.

“This grant sends a clear message, that the federal government believes that Michigan Tech and Houghton have enormous potential for creating new, high-tech jobs,” said Michigan Tech President Glenn D. Mroz.
