ANN ARBOR – Boasting a leg up on the German and French competition, Hyundai Motor Co. has introduced its new diesel “R-Engine” in 2.2L and 2.0L variants for markets outside North America.
The 2.0L diesel engine is rated at 184hp and 289 pound-ft of torque, while the 2.2L reaches 200hp and 321 pound-ft torque. Hyundai doesn’t provide fuel economy estimates, but says the 2.0L will be the most efficient in its class, Green Fuels Forecast reports.
Hyundai starts production next year on the engine, which will power the 2010 Tuscon SUV and Sonata sedan.
The Korean automaker introduced the new engines, expected to meet Euro V emissions standards, at the Advanced Diesel Engine Technology Symposium in Seoul. The engines include a diesel particulate filter with exhaust gas recirculation via a bypass valve.
The R-Engine is supported by Bosch’s third-generation common rail system with piezo-electric injectors distributing fuel at 1800 bar. The mill also includes a electronically controlled variable geometry turbocharger and an advanced engine control unit.
The all-aluminium mill is mated with a 16-valve dual overhead camshaft, which is driven by an internal steel timing chain. Engineers have attempted to minimize NVH with the addition of a lower balance shaft, which has been encased in a stiffened ladder frame housing to increase rigidity.
“R proves Hyundai’s diesel development capabilities really are world-class. With diesels becoming cleaner and more fuel efficient all the time, there’s a growing demand for diesel powerplants worldwide and Hyundai is well positioned to supply the market with the very best diesel technology,” said Dr. Hyun-Soon Lee, president of the Corporate Research and Development Division.
