ANN ARBOR ? The next BioArbor on April 10 will feature two seasoned venture capital investors, both with capital to invest and novel investment strategies. Both are based outside of Michigan, yet have made local investments and are actively seeking opportunities to invest in Michigan.
The event will offer a great platform to hear about the broader dynamics in healthcare venture capital: what has changed, where are the opportunities, and how should we move forward.
Healthcare venture capital investing, which has been under significant pressure over the last five years because investment returns to investors limited partners have not met expectations. As a result, healthcare VC firms have struggled to raise new funds and must show improved returns and a differentiated strategy to be successful moving forward.
At the same time, the landscape of opportunities for investing in healthcare has changed dramatically. Drug and device companies, the main focus for healthcare VC investing before 2008, are facing increasing headwinds on regulatory and reimbursement fronts making it more difficult for them to be successful raising venture capital money. Healthcare reform and the increasing focus on rising healthcare costs in the US has brought significant attention to healthcare IT and services investing and has also changed the lens through which device and drug investing is viewed.
