LANSING – Wayne Circuit Judge Warfield Moore rejected efforts by the Michigan State Police to end a lawsuit over its participation in the Multi-State Anti-Terrorism Information Exchange (MATRIX), a federal anti-terrorism program.

Former Michigan Gov. William Milliken is among the plaintiffs seeking public access to the information collected by the State Police under the program.

“Judge Warfield Moore’s ruling will finally allow the sun to shine on the government’s methods of sharing private information on law-abiding citizens,” said ACLU Executive Director Kary Moss, another of the participants in the lawsuit. “Because of the enormous power and inherent danger in this type of system, it is vital that MATRIX operates in an open and accountable manner.”

Judge Moore set the next hearing in the case for August 18.
