BATTLE CREEK – The W.K. Kellogg Foundation has made a $1.2 million grant to fund the statewide expansion of Intern In Michigan, a program run on the east side of the state by the Detroit Regional Chamber and the West Michigan Strategic Alliance. The grant is good through 2012.
The program, launched in April, connects students graduating from Michigan colleges and universities with internships at Michigan companies in hopes of keeping young talent in Michigan to work as interns now, and permanent jobs later.
After logging into InternInMichigan.com and creating profiles, students can search and apply for internships. Employers can create organizational profiles, post internships and recruit college graduates.
More than 4,400 Michigan college and university students and 450 employers have registered at the site so far. Some 230 internships have been listed on the site.
The New Economy Initiative for Southeast Michigan provided $1.9 million in initial funding for the site which also garnered a $500,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Workforce Innovations in Regional Economic Development program.
