LANSING – Long-anticipated funding to pay for the customs plaza on the U.S. side of the new bridge connecting Detroit and Windsor, Ontario, may finally be coming together.

U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson told The Detroit News on Tuesday that an agreement on a funding mechanism is close. U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Lansing) also told the News that officials are working hard on the issue.

President Barack Obama did not include funding for the customs plaza in his 2015-16 fiscal year budget proposal.

The Canadian government is paying for all parts of the project except the customs plaza.

Governor Rick Snyder, speaking to reporters Tuesday, said he viewed Johnson’s comments “as a positive statement” and that there is considerable discussion taking place on how to fund the customs plaza.
