LANSING – No deal on the 2009-10 and 2010-11 fiscal year budget Tuesday, but officials said they are optimistic targets could be reached as soon as Thursday with conference committees acting next week.
That kind of talk no doubt will provoke some cynicism after the government shutdowns of 2007 and 2009 were preceded by similar optimism and talk of progress, but officials said the tone of the discussions is much different this year with no talk of a tax increase as part of the mix.
Sen. Ron Jelinek (R-Three Oaks), chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, said negotiators are mainly working out final technical details on some of the proposals.
“It could be very soon. It could be Thursday, I don’t know,” Jelinek said. “We’ve pretty much agreed on things, but we’ve just got to get through the final details.”
