LANSING – The Michigan Senate Energy Policy and Public Utilities Committee will adopt goals next week to help create a long-term energy policy for the state.
Committee Chair Sen. Bruce Patterson (R-Canton) urged the parties to have their comments on goal statements that had already been proposed, as well as any additional proposed goals, submitted by Wednesday for the expected vote on Thursday.
The schedule Patterson outlined Thursday would have the committee reporting legislation in line with those goals by mid-November. He has already introduced shell legislation to carry the energy plan and said some additional legislation will be drafted.
Among the goals proposed so far, David Gard with the Michigan Environmental Council sought a plan “that fosters economic vitality and a superior quality of life for Michigan residents.” But he said it should include a continuing review of the state’s energy mixing giving preference to energy efficiency and renewable energy where those are cost-effective.
Chuck Hadden with the Michigan Manufacturers Association said the plan should provide the state has “enough energy available, at a price that is competitive to the region, to protect and provide the citizens and job providers of the state.”
