LANSING – Michigan exports to Canada increased in January, but exports to Mexico fell slightly, according to a report from the U.S. Department of Transportation issued Tuesday.

Michigan retained its spot as the top exporter to Canada among the 50 states, with $5.67 billion in trade flowing across that border. That was up from $5.59 billion in December and $4.98 billion in January 2011.

Trade with Mexico was off a bit, with only $3.12 billion in exports over the nation’s southern border in January, compared to $3.65 billion in December. But that was still up from $3.03 billion in January 2011 and still retained the state’s third place rank behind Texas and California, respectively.
