LANSING – The Michigan Film Office on Monday announced the approval of film and digital media incentives for the final five projects of fiscal year 2014, bringing its year-end totals to 27 projects awarded more than $63.7 million in incentives.

The Film Office said the incentives would generate more than $245.4 million of projected expenditures in the state and upwards of 2,181 hires with a full-time equivalent of 1,298 jobs.

“These five projects showcase our efforts to support independent films and series in the state, as well as projects within the digital media industry,” said Margaret O’Riley, director of the Michigan Film Office, in a statement. “This year has illustrated that Michigan can support a major studio project and at the same time be a terrific place to make independent films.”

Among the final five projects for the fiscal year is the third installment of the Mickey Matson series, “Mickey Matson and the Helm of Darkness.” The project centers on a mythical battle helmet worn by the Greek god Hades that has the power of invisibility and mind control. Hidden for centuries, it surfaces in Northern Michigan, where Mickey Matson must keep it safe, the Film Office described in a statement.

“Mickey” will film in Ludington, Manistee and Mackinac Island, and was awarded an incentive of $222,613 on $733,078 of projected in-state expenditures. It expects to hire 47 workers with a full-time equivalent of four jobs.

Also included in that list is Oxygen Network’s “Preachers of Detroit,” a television series focusing on themes of faith, family and friendship, was awarded an incentive of $405,811 on more than $1.39 million of projected in-state expenditures. The project expects to hire 85 Michigan workers with a full-time equivalent of 12 jobs.

Also in Detroit will be “Destined,” a project expecting to hire 90 workers with the full-time equivalent of nine jobs. It was awarded an incentive of $256,018 on $875,072 of projected in-state expenditures.

Filming in Detroit, Wayne and Novi will be “Tommy Battles the Silver Dragon,” a feature film where Tommy Silver faces the guilt he carries from the loss of his mother, who died in childbirth. The project was awarded an incentive of $102,855 on $376,976 of projected in-state expenditures. The project is expected to hire 68 workers with a full-time equivalent of three jobs.

The Film Office also awarded $61,001 on $174,635 of eligible Michigan investment for the project “1-To-1 Fan,” a mobile app providing a digital gathering place for fans of sports stars. Customers create and customize their mobile app via an interactive game to allow them to follow major athletes through social channels, as well as to engage with other fans and marketing events.

The app is being developed by Southfield-based PIXO Group, which expects to create 11 jobs with a full-time equivalent of three jobs.
