LANSING – Michigan was among 20 states given a B for their online budget and spending transparency by the U.S. Public Interest Research Group Education Fund. Budget transparency has been a big issue for Gov. Snyder.

Among the 50 states, Michigan ranked 15th with 86.5 points. Indiana was the top state with 94 points. Wisconsin, with 90 points, an A-, and Illinois, with 88 points, a B+, were the other states to best Michigan on the group’s rating.

Among the measures in the rating was having an online checkbook, having it downloadable and searchable and including various elements. States received additional points for level of detail in the report and for allowing it to be downloaded in a data format that could be analyzed.

Michigan got credit for not only its general budget, but also its various economic development tax credit programs, being posted in checkbook format.
