LANSING – Schools will have to live with the cuts approved in the 2009-10 budget, but they may not see the pro-ration cuts Gov. Jennifer Granholm had issued shortly after the budget was signed.
But the state is also going to have to look again at its tax system to be sure schools and other state priorities have sufficient funds to operate, Granholm said.
At a press conference to announce the signing of school reform legislation, Granholm said she did not expect to have to implement the $127 per student she had ordered in late October but delayed in December on some improvement in revenue figures.
Granholm said Monday’s revenue estimating conference would confirm whether the cuts were needed, but she said recent revenue reports are indicating they will not be.
But she will also continue a workgroup looking at tax policy changes that would allow more funding for schools and a resumption of the Michigan Promise Scholarship.
“I’m hopeful that January produces the will to address the structural deficit and school funding as well,” she said.
