MIDLAND – The MidMichigan Innovators are presenting a special program on April 3 aimed at helping small businesses with technology innovations land multimillion dollar federal research and development grants.

This seminar is specifically aimed at scientists in the region that may have recently retired or became available to embark on new horizons, as well as other scientists and faculty who are simply interested in leveraging their expertise and knowledge to help small businesses on Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and (Small Business Technology Transfer Research) STTR federal grants.

The SBIR/STTR program funds small business R&D grant topics that closely match Great Lakes Bay region scientific, technical and business strengths and capabilities ?? areas like Advanced Manufacturing, Alternative Energy, Bio-Based, Homeland Security, Materials, Chemistry and Electronics, Information, Life Sciences, Education and beyond.

Individual grants can range from: $100,000 for Phase I to $1,000,000 for Phase II. In addition, the State of Michigan (MEDC Emerging Technology Fund) provides match funding on SBIR/STTR grants. The grant funds pay for direct project related expenses (including salaries and consultants). Most importantly, many successful firms in Michigan and the U.S. routinely procure multi-millions in commercially viable SBIR/STTR grants each year.

Mark H. Clevey, MPA, Director for Entrepreneurship and Commercialization with Saginaw Valley State University will lead the session. As an award-winning and nationally recognized expert and SBIR/STTR ??insider? Mark will help participants to:

Understand how SBIR and STTR grants work and how to win.

Identify how to effectively partner with small firms on grant applications and research.

Learn how to craft competitive R&D grant proposals for SBIR/STTR solicitations.

Learn where you can get further help.

This seminar is aimed specifically at university and research institute faculty and staff and freelance scientists ?? with PhD??s in Hard Science – interested in serving as Principal Investigators, Researchers and/or Consultants on federal SBIR/STTR grants.

The program will be held April 3, from 9 a.m. to noon, at the MidMichigan Innovation Center in Midland. It is sponsored by sponsored by Saginaw Valley State University and its federal WIRED program.
