EAST LANSING ? Mitostem, which focuses on developing and commercializing novel technologies to advance stem cell research, won the $100,000 SmartZone Award Tuesday night at the Great Lakes Entrepreneurs Quest business-plan competition.

While a company that treats wastewater from the food and beverage industry and transforms it into high value algal biomass for animal feed won the $25,000 grand prize in the Emerging Company category at GLEQ.

Patient Provider Communications of Ypsilanti won second place in the Emerging Company category and $15,000, while Local Orbit of Ann Arbor third place, and $10,000. Patient Provider Communications has developed a handheld nurses call devices. Local Orbit has developed a software-as-a-service platform to make it easier for restaurants to buy and sell local foods.

Patient Provider Communications also won $10,000 from Comcast Business Class Technology Information Innovation Award.

Other special awards went to:

Automation Alley Advanced Manufacturing Innovation Award, $12,500, Beet Analytics Technology, Plymouth. The company brings the power of digital technology and advanced knowledge of factory automation together, creating a powerful Automation Intelligent System, ENVISION.

Global Food Protection Institute Food Safety Innovation Award, $10,000, Micro Techno Solutions, Houghton.

Michigan Medical Device Accelerator, Medical Device Innovation Award, $10,000, Warmilu (M-Wrap), Ann Arbor.

MSU Bioeconomy Institute, Green Chemistry Innovation Award, $5,000. Blue Water Bioproducts, China.

Three winners were also named in the New Business Category at GLEQ.

First place and $5000 went to CastNotice of Ann Arbor;

Second place and $2,500 went to Star Toilet Paper;

Third place and $1,000 went to Lavin, dba Lavin Lift Strap.
