LANSING – In the registration period to sign up for health insurance under the federal exchange that ended Sunday, more than 340,000 Michigan residents enrolled or re-enrolled for coverage, according to figures released by the federal Department of Health and Human Services.

The total who automatically re-enrolled or signed up for the first time was 340,905 according to federal figures.

Through Sunday’s deadline, more than 11 million people nationwide either signed up for coverage or were re-enrolled.

While the deadline was Sunday, it has been extended to the end of this week for persons who were in the process of applying for coverage and had not completed that process.

Of the Michigan residents who enrolled or re-enrolled, more than 157,000 were from the metro Detroit region. More than 33,200 signed up from the Grand Rapids area.

The federal department also said that 88 percent of the enrollees qualify for a tax credit of $240 a month to help pay the cost of their coverage.
