DETROIT – A significant shift in support occurred after Wednesday’s debate between the Republican presidential candidates in Michigan to the benefit of Mitt Romney, according to a new poll out Friday.

Romney now has 39 percent to 31 percent for Rick Santorum, according to the survey from the Foster McCollum White and Associates and Baydoun Consulting firms based in the Detroit area. A survey conducted earlier this week by the same firm showed Santorum at 37 percent and Romney at 34 percent.

The error margin in the new survey is plus or minus 2.06 percentage points. The poll asked respondents if they watched Wednesday’s debate, in which Santorum was often on the defensive and got into some tangled explanations of his voting record in Congress.

“Of those whose choice was confirmed by the debate performance, Romney received 54.83 percent while Santorum received only 20.93 percent,” the polling firm said.

A new poll out from Mitchell Research and Rosetta Stone Friday showed Romney at 36 percent and Santorum at 33 percent, a slight improvement for Romney since its last survey earlier this week.
