LANSING – Michigan officials participating and observing in the ongoing discussions on a utility regulation and energy package are expecting to shortly see a new substitute on SB 213 that would set the amount of the energy the state would see developed by renewal resources.
Sen. Patty Birkholz (R-Saugatuck Twp.) could not be reached for comment on what the substitute might include and when it would be released.
However a number of sources said they expected the proposal would call for the state to develop 10 percent of its electric energy from renewable resources by 2015. The 10 percent level would not include energy saved through efficiencies.
When the Senate initially passed the bill it called for 7 percent of electricity generated by renewable resources, and that would have included savings through electric efficiency.
Officials are still shooting to try to resolve the utility regulation issue (in HB 5524 ) and the RPS issue (in SB 213) by September 9, when the Legislature returns from its summer break.
