DETROIT – The Michigan Small Business & Technology Development Center and Eastern Michigan University recognize the sacrifice our soldiers have made and want to help those veterans seeking to start their own businesses by offering a veteran-specific New Venture program at no-cost, starting October 13 at the EMU Livonia campus. The New Venture class normally costs $700 per participant.
Working in conjunction with VetBizCentral, the New Venture program will be aimed at aspiring and early stage entrepreneurs through the 10-week business development class featuring the nationally acclaimed New Venture curriculum. This program helps entrepreneurs evaluate business opportunities and develop an action plan for owning their own business.
“Our veterans have earned our gratitude for serving our country,” said Richard King, Regional Director of the Southeast Michigan Region of the MI-SBTDC. “We support the efforts of those veterans that want to leverage their military service and other experiences to become entrepreneurs. Hopefully, this free program will play a part in their success.”
As military men and women begin the next chapter of their lives, entrepreneurship is an appealing option as 45 percent of veterans start their own businesses after their military service is completed. Their commitment to excellence, attention to detail, strategic planning skills, and focus on success are the same traits that make business-owners successful. The program is available to all veterans, not just recently serving veterans.
Veterans who have interest in the program can apply online or by calling (734) 487-0355. Normal $700 program costs have been waived for qualifying veterans, thanks to the sponsorship of Michigan State University Broadband Technology Opportunity Program (BTOP) grant award. As part of the qualification process, applicants will be required to attend (at no charge) an orientation prior to the start of class. Those applicants who qualify for the program will be contacted directly by the MI-SBTDC.
