ANN ARBOR – Nissan is working hard to catch with the leaders in fuel cell vehicle development. The company should be able to reach the same stage as Honda and Toyota within three years, predicts Nobuo Okubo, executive vice president and member of the board, research and development/powertrain, at Nissan.

The FCV program has been in operation for several years, with a series of different development vehicles, the latest being based on the X-Trail SUV platform.

?We have built 20 FCVs so far. Ours is one of the three best in the world in terms of NVH, packaging and space available,? Okubo said. ?However our performance is so-so. Durability and reliability are still obstacles and membrane technology is a problem, we need a scientific break-through.?
