LANSING – Online want ads showed a big increase in the state during August, up by 9.5 percent, figures by Michigan’s Labor Market Information division. The increase reversed two months of decline in the ads, the report said, and was the second largest increase in online want ads this year.

There were 174,920 online ads calling for workers to fill available jobs during the month, up by 15,240 ads over the number posted in July, the report said. Across the nation, there were increases in online jobs posted in 45 states, the report said.

The increase also came as Michigan’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fell in August, though that occurred as much because people left the labor force as much as people found work.

Niles-Benton Harbor was the only regional labor market that did not see an increase in online want ads. And in six regional labor markets the number of ads increased by more than 10 percent.

There were 93,000 first time ads posted, and nearly half were in professional, administrative support or sales categories. Ads for workers in mathematical or computer occupations were up by more than 15 percent during the month compared to July.
