LANSING – U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Lansing) has a hefty 16-point lead on Republican challenger Peter Hoekstra, according to a new poll released Tuesday.

The poll comes from Rasmussen Reports, whose polls have tended to show Republican candidates polling better than most other polls. Stabenow had 53 percent to 37 percent for Hoekstra.

The survey was conducted Thursday among 500 likely voters and has an error margin of plus or minus 4.5 percentage points. The ad was conducted with automated interviews.

Meanwhile, Mr. Hoekstra announced a new variation of his ad campaign emphasizing his theme that Stabenow is the worst senator Michigan has ever had and the worst senator in the U.S. Senate.

A spokesperson for the Hoekstra campaign said the ad eventually would appear on television.
