LANSING – Republican Rick Snyder has support from more than half of voters in the state, according to a poll released Friday by Foster, McCollum, White and Associates and Baydoun Consulting.
The survey showed 53.88 percent of voters at least leaning toward voting for Snyder, while Democrat Virg Bernero had support from only 32.52 percent.
The poll also showed Bernero was losing more of his base, with only 60.38 percent of self-identified Democrats supporting him, while 24.05 percent were supporting Snyder.
Bernero won only 10.6 percent of Republicans, while Snyder held 80.04 percent of his base, the poll said.
Among independent voters, Snyder led 61.24 percent to 23.82 percent.
“Snyder’s electoral strength continues to be the independent voting community. Bernero must find a way to connect with this voting bloc,” the report said. “Without significant support among independent voters, Bernero can discount most of the swing counties from his electoral road map for victory.”
The poll showed Snyder leading across the state, including having a 59.25 percent to 30.62 percent advantage in Bernero’s home region of Central Michigan. And among the six largest Democrat-leaning counties, Bernero led 45.15 percent to 43.27 percent.
The automated telephone poll of 2,331 residents conducted October 11 had a margin of error of plus-or-minus 2.03 percentage points.
