LANSING – Governor Rick Snyder has moved out to a lead against his likely Democratic opponent, former U.S. Rep. Mark Schauer, in a new poll after previous surveys showed the pair in a statistical tie.
The survey from EPIC/MRA, released to the Detroit Free Press, put Mr. Snyder at 44 percent and Schauer at 36 percent. That compares to a 39-39 tie from an EPIC/MRA poll in May and an April poll from the same firm that had Schauer at 39 percent and Snyder at 38 percent.
The live operator poll of likely voters was conducted Sunday through Tuesday and had an error margin of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
Schauer still remains unknown to most voters. But notably, Snyder’s favorability and job approval ratings have improved considerably since May, during which time he pushed hard for Medicaid expansion and authorized Detroit to file for bankruptcy.
In May, 45 percent said they had a favorable impression of Snyder compared to 44 percent unfavorable. Now Snyder is at 49 percent favorable, 38 percent unfavorable. On job approval, Snyder was at 44 percent positive, 54 percent negative. That is improved from a 38-58 spread in May.
Meanwhile, EPIC/MRA continues to show the U.S. Senate race close between the presumptive Democratic nominee, U.S. Rep. Gary Peters of Bloomfield Township, and the lone declared Republican candidate, former Secretary of State Terri Land. Mr. Peters had 38 percent to 37 percent for Land.
