LANSING – The Public Service Commission is offering $4 million in grants for battery systems that could connect to the state’s electric grid.

“This grant will go a long way toward making Michigan the advanced battery capital of the world,” said PSC Chair Orjiakor Isiogu. “Monies from the Smart Grid Energy Storage grant will benefit Michigan residents, businesses, educational institutions, and/or government agencies through the development and marketing of advanced energy efficient technologies.”

But the grants do not specifically require chemical battery systems and allow for mechanical power storage demonstrations, the release announcing the grants said.

Bids are due at noon on May 7. A pre-proposal conference is scheduled for April 22 at 10 a.m. at the commission’s offices, 6545 Mercantile Way, Lansing.

Money for the grants comes from the Low-Income and Energy Efficiency Fund.
