LANSING – An annual electric rate increase for customers of Northern States Power Company of $839,000 has been approved by the Public Service Commission. The settlement agreement will affect customers of the Wisconsin-based utility in two counties in the Upper Peninsula bordering Wisconsin.

The settlement should end the utility request filing that was initially made in 2010, although the billing request covers calendar year 2011. The final settlement also sets the rates at 22 percent less than the increase the utility had sought, the PSC said.

Under the increase, a customer using 550-kilowatt hours of electricity could see an increase of $5.20 in their monthly bills.

The settlement also allows the utility to sell wind-generated electricity at $1.20 per kilowatt hour. Purchase of the power will be strictly voluntary on behalf of the customers.
