LANSING – Michigan ranked fourth among the top 10 clean energy states in the second quarter according to a report by Environmental Entrepreneurs, a business group that promotes environmental policy.

Michigan, the most recent report showed, announced 9 projects with 1,319 possible jobs attached. The state ranked 13th in the group’s first quarter report.

“Taking advantage of the state’s strong manufacturing base, and the facilities and skills upon which Michigan’s auto industry was build, the state’s electric vehicle manufacturing sector is leading the way, along with its wind and solar industries,” the report said, mentioning the presence of companies like GE, A123 Systems, Clinton Township’s Applied Energy Technologies and Grand Rapids’ Altronics Energy.

The group tracked 12 wind generation project announcements set to create about 2,300 jobs in the second quarter, a statement by the group said, coming from 31 wind generation project announcements that would create more than 9,100 jobs in the first quarter.

California took the top spot, followed by Florida and New York. Other Midwest states rounding out the top 10 were Ohio in sixth place and Illinois in eighth place. The group said nearly one-third of the energy projects announced in 30 states in the second quarter came from the Midwest.
