ROCHESTER – After four consecutive years of winning the Michigan Regional Future City Competition, the team from St. John Lutheran School in Rochester has claimed the title of National Champion, winning the national Future City Competition held Tuesday in Washington, DC. St. John Lutheran also won the People’s Choice Award, a prize of $7,500 and a trip to Space Camp from Bentley Systems.
The Michigan Regional Future City Competition was held January 27, 2014 at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi. St. John Lutheran was one of 23 competing teams that vied for Best City of the Future.
With a Future City theme of: Tomorrow?s Transit- Design A Way To Move People In And Around Your City, the team from St. John built a city in the year 2164 called Gongpin located on the Li River in the Guangxi region of mountainous south-central China. To ensure a better transportation system for the city?s residents, the students created FAIR transport (Flexible, Accessible, Integrated, and Renewable). FAIR links all modes of transport, including personal vehicles, mass transit, and cargo systems at subhubs and is accessible through a LifeWatch holographic, voice-activated communication system.
The Michigan Regional Future City Competition, organized and administered by The Engineering Society of Detroit (ESD) is a STEM-based competition that challenges 6th, 7th and 8th grades students to envision a city 150-plus years into the future in which they would like to live.
