LANSING – Attorney General Bill Schuette has filed a class-action lawsuit against AmeriGas under Michigan’s Consumer Protection Act charging the company gouged customers with high-priced propane during the ferocious 2013-14 winter.
In a separate action, Schuette said he has reached an agreement with Ferrellgas to provide some 600 customers with more than $100,000 in cost relief.
The suit against AmeriGas was filed in Berrien Circuit Court and charged the supplier gouged customers by charging them rates that were both “grossly” in excess of what other companies were charging and what other AmeriGas customers were being charged.
Schuette also charged the company refused to honor per-gallon prices customers believed they had locked in, and refused to honor quotes made on prices.
AmeriGas is the largest propane supplier in the state, and has said it supplies gas to more than 200,000 customers in the state.
The settlement with Ferrellgas will grant the affected customers the difference in the prices they paid for propane and the price they should have paid, plus 50 percent.
During the winter, propane was often in short supply in part because nationally farmers needed more of the gas to dry corn.
