DETROIT – Governor Rick Snyder is seeking federal approval of 50,000 employment-based visas over a five year period in hopes of bringing immigrants to live and work in Detroit.

If approved by the federal government, and Snyder was headed to Washington after Thursday’s announcement to lobby for the approval, immigrants receiving an EB-2 visa under the program would have to live and work in the city.

The emphasis would be on attracting immigrants with advanced academic degrees or those with “exceptional ability” in the sciences, arts or business.

Snyder said if approved, the influx of 50,000 immigrants in five years with advanced skills could be an economic boon for Detroit, with many of them starting businesses and creating jobs.

“The part you should focus in on in particularly is all the jobs they’re going to create for Detroiters and Michiganders,” he said at a Detroit news conference.
